Perth’s Best Breakfast

Despite the long lines, inner city locals ( and those from further away ) love nothing more than a weekend breakfast. STM has just compiled their Top 100 list of places to eat, drink and be seen. Here’s a sample;

The hand-cut bacon is something else. Not only is it thicker than average, but 21-year-old chef Jacob D’Vauz (who apprenticed at Rockpool Perth) dry-cures it using juniper berries, fennel salt and cumin, then hits it with a smoking gun to deliver a light charry flavour. Served atop two poached beauties, licked with bearnaise on toast, it’s as brilliant as it is simple. Then add a blueberry-flavoured coconut smoothie or a house-blend juice. All-day breakfast until 3pm.

Quite possibly Perth’s most beautiful dishes are pumped out of this tiny, sub-10sq m square kitchen. We love the tower of french toast with berries, raspberries, coconut kernels, passionfruit, mint and maple syrup. Delish.

Cooked for 48 hours, sous vide, the paprika-spiced beef brisket with Asahi beer-braised onions is the hero of Tbsp’s eggs benedict, although the slow-cooked eggs and creamy hollandaise aren’t far behind. This dish is one of the best breakfasts in Perth.

Also try the brioche French toast, soaked with house-made honey butter, dehydrated raspberries and cereal.

The 17 breakfast options, beachside location and holiday vibe fuse to make it worth braving the constant queues.

Diversity is king here. The huge huevos rancheros (soft tortillas with black beans, fried eggs, thin crisped chorizo and a daub of avocado) contrasts with the black sticky rice and coconut-ty tapioca porridge. Or there’s devilish banana pancakes, with double cream and pecans, piped with salted caramel sauce.

Mark and Steph Sayers deliver an incredibly inventive menu. The potato rosti dish, for example, is teamed with Bramley apple and thyme chutney, greens and poached eggs. Instead of their famous banana bread, there’s now a toasted cherry and coconut version.

The menu changes regularly, except for the popular leek and parmesan croquettes – three fried spheres interspersed with perfectly poached eggs are encircled with a warm, leek-infused cream and topped with a messy pile of fresh green leaves.

It’s joy in a bowl.

Attention to detail sets Tuck Shop apart. Take the bruschetta: the tomatoes atop grilled bacon, avocado chunks, basil leaves and generous wipes of goat’s cheese are blanched and peeled.

What a considerate touch. Plus, the layered ruby red toms are some of the tastiest we’ve had, anywhere. Order anything with confidence.

The seriously attractive staff are reason enough to book a table at Fez, but the fare also holds its own. There’s the beautifully presented orange blossom and vanilla panna cotta, garnished with plum powder and surrounded by seasonal fruits sprinkled with puffed buckwheat.

The buttermilk pancakes are less pretty, but please the tastebuds with maple syrup, a quenelle of mascarpone and a pot of berry compote. Our tip is to add bacon for a thorough flavour rush. Brekky is served until 2pm.

Imagine slicing through soft butter. Now replace that image with five-spice pulled pork and you’ll get a feeling for the addictive pork eggs benni served up at Jack and Jill until noon.

It gets busy on Saturdays, but this free-range dish is worth waiting for. Coming a close second is the cured salmon with crisp potato rosti, crème fraîche and poached eggs.

The drinks are on a par, particularly the salted caramel shake, which infuses the milk with such rich (but not sweet) flavour that it’s almost like drinking syrup.

Moore & Moore

Here, you’ll get a lovely couple of poached eggs with avocado, fetta and nuts, right through until 2.30pm. There’s also the mainstay – sage pumpkin matched with Turkish bread toast, walnuts and googs.

Vegan options are plentiful, too, and they do nitrate-free bacon.

With Voyage opening a sister restaurant on Elizabeth Quay’s man-made island this summer, expectations are high. Its loyal customers reserve plenty of love for the 11-year-old eatery.

Signature dish Noma’s Salsa – marinated fetta, avocado and truss tomatoes with poached eggs – remains a popular choice for foodies.
